Mandatory Composting in San Francisco

Inhabitat.com brings news from the San Francisco, California, about the USA’s first mandatory composting law that came into effect on the 21st of October. Mayor Gavin Newsom signed the mandatory composting law last June, which will see big green composting bins being used alongside blue recycling bins and black trash bins.

This will increase San Francisco’s recycling rate from 72% to 90%!

Mayor Newsom further states that the city plans to eliminate all landfill waste by the year 2020 through this new law.

Given that Malaysia as a country can’t get a simple recycling program going, perhaps a targeted city-by-city approach would be for the best – and the adoption of the San Francisco model could be viable.
